We live in a world where virtually everything can be done online. But where is all of this information going? And is all of this information being protected? We can easily obtain constant access to the Internet thanks to high speed Internet, and handy devices like the Blackberry. This makes it possible for us to exchange information directly via the Internet. However, most people do not understand the price that comes with this great convenience.

You will frequently find stories being run on the national news about company databases being corrupted, leaving millions of people wondering if their identities had been stolen. How on earth can one go about protecting their identity online? And is doing business online really as safe as so many people claim?

1 – Install a firewall on your computer, and make sure that the one on your router is turned on as well. Firewalls are essentially software that prevents unauthorized access to your computer. If you do not have a firewall in place, you can easily become exposed to hackers while you are surfing on the Internet. Firewalls come in many different forms, including both paid and free, and both package and stand alone versions.

2 – Make use of anti-virus software in order to avoid contracting a virus on your computer, especially when so many can monitor what your habits are on your computer. Do not ever let your annual anti-virus software subscription pass the expiration date; otherwise you may no longer be protected.

3 – Do not use the same password for more than one of your online Internet accounts. It may seem tempting to use the same password for the sake of simplicity, or so you do not forget anything, but a hacker who gains access to your computer can easily gain access to all of your Internet accounts as well if you are not careful.

4 – Make use of spam filters in your e-mail box. Most hosted e-mail services offer anti-spam solutions, and you can create your own spam filters in most e-mail clients like Outlook.

5 – Avoid E-mail Scams. E-mail scams are not like spam. Instead, e-mail scams are engineered in order to convince you to trust whoever has sent the e-mail. These scams typically involve large sums of money that do not exist. These scammers work to gain your trust over a period of months, until they steal your money by gaining unauthorized access to your bank accounts.
