We are living in a world where virtually everything can be completed online. But where is all of this transferred information really going? And is all of our information actually being protected? We can quickly obtain constant access to the Internet thanks to high speed Internet, and handy devices like the Blackberry. This makes it possible for us to exchange information directly via the Internet. However, most people do not understand the price that comes with this great convenience. How can we be certain that our information is safe?
– Do not ever click a link that you find in an e-mail message, if you do not know who the sender is. This is actually one of the easiest ways that a hacker can gain access to your computer and all of your information.
– Make sure that every single website that you visit is secure. Your browser status bar will tell you if a website is safe and secure or not. Do not do business or give personal information on a website that is not secure.
– Beware of the art of phishing! Phishing e-mails tend to look like they are coming from reputable websites, such as eBay, PayPal, and even your banking website. However, these websites have been designed to steal your identity by tricking you into logging into their fake website. Essentially, these e-mails are sent with the hope that you will read the e-mail, take its contents seriously, and click a link within the e-mail in order to verify some account details, or to log in to your account. Once you do this, the people sending the e-mail will have snatched up your vital login information, and you can rest assured that within days, your account will be zeroed out completely. The best way to keep this from happening is to avoid clicking on any embedded links that you find in your e-mail. Type the official website address into your browser bar instead, to ensure that you arrive at the right website.
– Watch out for any misdirected URLs. For example, if you misspell a URL when typing it in, you may be redirected to a fake website which looks authentic. You may be asked to log in using your legitimate login details, but the website will capture these details and your account information will be stolen from right under your nose.
